Sew Chapel Haberdashery is a small family run shop. The shop is loved by locals to Chapel and the surrounding areas, as well as tourists just visiting. We stock all your haberdashery essentials, plus wool, knitting needles, crochet hooks, patterns, fabric, sewing cotton and much more.
The property, The Old Hearse House, was erected in 1818 as an undertaker’s cart shed; it has since been used for various purposes from the Tourist Information Centre to a variety of retail types. It is located in the conservation area of Chapel-en-le-Frith, National grid reference SK 05887 80793.
This historic building was once used to store the horse drawn hearse and as the name suggests it was also used to store the dead prior to burial. The room above is where the person looking after the bodies lived, during that period it was common for the bodies to be stolen and sold for medical purposes.
The building is beautiful and well positioned with its stunning arched doorway, which lends itsself well to house a haberdashery.
My hobbies have always revolved around knitting, crochet, cross stitch and sewing, pretty much everything to do with needle crafts. The shop has always been an ambition; doing something that I love and working with the products I sell is my idea of heaven.
It took a lot of courage to take the steps to open the shop, being new to retail and my own business was something of an unknown to me. Looking back, I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner, it is my hobby, my dream and a step that I am truly glad that I have taken.
The help I received from my family was inspirational, from naming the shop to designing the logo, I couldn’t have done it without them.
